Gapped-Core Choke Designer

Design a PSU filter choke on a gapped core. · in Transformers

dcfilterinductance

Design a PSU filter choke on a gapped core. Three modes: solve for turns, inductance, or both. Calculates air-gap, shim thickness, wire gauge, window fill, DC resistance, voltage drop and copper loss -with a saturation warning when the flux exceeds Bmax.

How to use

Three modes — Turns, Inductance, or Design (works out both turns and gap).

What it's for

Design a PSU filter choke on a gapped core — a choke carrying DC, which is exactly why it needs a gap.

You enter

  • Core dimensions (illustrated), relative permeability, design flux density, DC current, current density, mean length per turn.

You get

  • Turns, air gap and shim thickness per limb, resulting inductance, A_L, effective permeability, flux density at working current with a saturation warning, wire gauge, window fill, DC resistance, DC voltage drop and copper loss.
  • The app marks where the gap goes on the core drawing itself.

Tips & warnings

  • Butting two core halves tight is NOT a zero gap — a residual 0.02–0.05 mm remains. Enter zero only for a solid uncut ring.
